Clara V.S. Phipps

PHIPPS, CLARA Clara V.S. Phipps died March 17, 2007. Born March 30, 1914 to Henry C. and Clara M. Van Schaack, widow of Allan R. Phipps. Preceded in death by sister Eleanor Knowles and brother Henry C. Van Schaack, Jr. Clara is survived by her children Terry Combs (Fran), Anthony M. Combs (Martha), Clara Moore (Kit) of Montrose, CO; step-children Graham R. Phipps (Carol), Antony Phipps (Betsy), Margaret Strickland (Jerry) of Klamath Falls, OR; 6 grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; dear friends Maria Rothrockel and Dottie Fiser. Clara loved her family and was a rock for all who were in need. She loved the family ranch, La Garita, in Creede, CO, and all of her many friends in Creede, especially Burdette Knous. Hiking in the mountains, hunting for Indian arrowheads, she treasured the mountain wildflowers. She was fascinated by the geology of her beloved Colorado mountains. Clara was a member of the Denver Country Club, Perennial Garden Club, the La Garita Club, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. She attended Mt. Vernon Seminary in Washington, D.C., and Colorado University where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, March 22, 2007, at St. Johns Episcopal Cathedral. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Creede Repertory Theater or the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Horan & McConaty, 1091 S. Colorado Blvd., is in charge of arrangements.
