Clara Joan Whipple

April 12, 1921 — December 24, 2013

Clara Joan Whipple was born in Alexandria Bay, New York on April 12, 1921. Her parents were Carl Alstein Foss and Sarah Walton Thompson. She grew up n Bellmore, Long Island and graduated from Vassar with a B.A. in 1942. She attended Columbia University and became a registered nurse. While working as a nurse, she met her future husband, Robert Zenas Whipple. Joan and Robert moved to Denver, Colorado in 1945 to be near Robert's father, Charles Whipple. Joan then attended the University of Denver and earned a Master's Degree in Education. She taught first and second grades at Boulevard Elementary School for 26 years and Brown Elementary School for two years. She played postal chess and was the US Women's champion. She was a member of Ports of Call and traveled extensively to such diverse places at Iceland, China, Australia, the Yukon, the Ivory Coast and the Galapogos Islands. She traveled numerous times to Europe and Mexico and extensively in the United States. She was active in square dancing and was a member of the Rocky Tops where she met Bob Waind who was a dear friend and companion for years. She was an active member of the Grace Baptist and Red Rocks Fellowship Church. She is survived by three children; Barbara Foltz, Robert Z. Whipple, Jr., and Janet Cozzi; four grandsons, Brian Foltz, Robert Z. Whipple, III, Anthony Cozzi and Nick Cozzi and four great granddaughters. There will be a Memorial Service on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd, Lakewood, CO.
