Clarence Oscar “Bud” Mahn Jr. was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 8, 1931 to Geraldine and Clarence O. Mahn Sr. On October 28, 2020, he passed away, at home in Denver, Colorado after a very short battle with Leukemia. He was surrounded by his family. He was 89 years old.
He was a gifted pianist, loved opera and a classical music aficionado. He attended Drexel University where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters Degree in City Planning. He went on to further his education at Columbia University where he received a second Masters Degrees in Environmental Engineering.
He served in the Army, rank: Private First Class from January 20, 1955 to October 19, 1956. He was a member of the Army band where he played the glockenspiel and piano. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal for his service.
In 1957, during a work assignment in Wales, he met the love of his life at a dance. After a year-long relationship through hand written letters and audio tapes, Bud returned to Deri South Wales, to marry Audrey “Joyce” Mahn on August 24, 1958. They moved to Nashville, where Joyce worked as a nurse at Vanderbilt Hospital while Bud worked as an engineer. They eventually settled in Denver where they raised their two children, Derilynn Mahn and Paul Gareth Mahn. Bud and Joyce enjoyed singing with Opera Colorado, performing in numerous theatre productions and sang in various choirs and madrigals over the years. Bud also loved the game of soccer. After several failed attempts to get Paul on a local team, Bud decided to start his own - The Crestmoor Cougars. The original team of 15, many of whom still play today, also coach and stay in contact to this day.
Upon Bud’s retirement from the State of Colorado, he learned to play the saxophone and joined the Sousa Band. During this time, Bud joined Joyce, full time to help run The Welsh Dragon/Cano’s Collection Tea Shop, serving tea, traditional English/Welsh lunches and scones for over 30 years. Making people happy was Bud's passion. He enjoyed getting to know his customers, serving Christmas Tea and reading a Christmas Story by Dylan Thomas. Everyone who knew Bud, loved him!
