Consuelo Plaza Marks

May 13, 1914 — November 28, 2006

This gracious, gentle lady was born on May 13, 1914 in New York City and passed away on November 28, 2006 in Denver, Colorado. Her father, don Luis Alberto Plaza y Sotomayor, was an Ecuadorian diplomat from one of the oldest and most honored families of Ecuador, where the first Plaza had arrived in 1590 by appointment from the King of Spain. Her mother, Helen Newell, was the scion of families that arrived in the American Colonies in the mid-1600s, one of whose members included General Nathaniel Greene of Revolutionary War fame. At the age of eight, Consuelo moved with her family, including brothers Luis and Bolivar, to Guayaquil, Ecuador, where her father conducted an import business. She grew into a beautiful young woman an accomplished classical pianist, long-distance swimmer, equestrian and tennis player. In 1942 she met and married Jay G. Marks, a petroleum geologist from Los Angeles, California. This loving, lasting relationship produced three sons as the family grew and prospered, living at times in Venezuela, California and finally Colorado. Consuelo is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jay G. Marks, and her sons Jay Jr. (Athena), John (Karen), Brian (Allison) and grandchildren Alina, Braden, Allison and Jordan. A public viewing will be held beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 3, 2006 at Horan and McConaty, 1091 South Colorado Boulevard, Denver, Colorado, followed at 2:00 p.m. by a Memorial Service in her honor.
