D. Adelaide (Addie) Cohen passed away in the early hours of February 6, 2022 at her home in southwest Denver surrounded by family. Addie was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1931. She is survived by her 4 children; Marcia (Cisco), Lori, Doug, and Bob (Becky); 11 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Irwin (Irv) H Cohen; her parents, Dorothy (Langston) McCoy, and Verl E McCoy; and her brother V Eugene (Gene) McCoy.
Addie grew up in Lagrange, Illinois. She attended Lyon’s High School, received her bachelor’s degree at Carlton College, and her Master’s Degree in Social Work at University of Michigan. She worked as a social worker at a girl’s school in Michigan where she met Irv who was the school’s psychologist. They lived in Michigan for 2 years, moved to Iowa for two years and then settled in Denver Colorado.
Upon moving to Denver, Addie was active in raising her children, participating in school programs, field trips and helping with studying as well as being active in PTA meetings. Outside of her family her second love was the League of Women Voters of Colorado where she found friendship and comradery, intellectual stimulation, developed an interest in international affairs, deepened her interest in women’s and LBGT rights, and supported environmental issues. She served on the Colorado League’s Board of Directors and was an active member for over 60 years.
When her children were in or had graduated high school she went back to paid work at the School of Professional Psychology where students earned PsyD’s Doctoral degrees in Psychology at the University of Denver. She supported the professors and loved assisting students with their career plans, papers, dissertations and internships. Wherever Irv and Addie went they saw graduated students who said they were greatly assisted by Addie in their student careers. Whether at the League, at DU or at home, she was known for being very organized and for her hearty laugh.
She loved to read and participated in book clubs, was active in a bridge club and also loved birds. She and Irv traveled throughout the US seeking birds and completing their birder lists. She was an accomplished knitter and knitted her kids, their spouses and grandkids beautiful intricate sweaters every year. She also crocheted placemats and snowflakes. She loved Christmas and spent all year preparing for her marvelous Christmas dinner and giving presents to her family which always included, among other things, a sweater and books.
She also loved the southwest and southwestern Native American art. She and Irv traveled extensively in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.
While she said as a child she didn’t really like to play piano, she preferred to be outside playing tennis, she and Irv went to many piano and symphony concerts. She particularly loved Jeffrey Siegel concerts at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities as Jeffrey played small sections of music while he explained the composer’s life and what was going on when the music was written and then played each piece completely through. She loved having a deep understanding of whatever she was involved with. Irv and Addie also attended the Littleton and Arapahoe symphony.
She had so many hobbies and connections, had a beautiful smile, and was loved and is missed by many.
She has requested that donations be made to the League of Women Voters of Colorado, 1410 Grant Street, Suite B204, Denver, CO 80203, http://lwvcolorado.org \
