Dale Schmitz

December 22, 1920 — January 7, 2022

Dale John Schmitz  passed away unexpectedly on January 7, 2022 in his home in Denver with his grandson Sam at his side. He had experienced unusually exceptional health until the end. Dale was born on December 22, 1920 in Milford, Iowa to William and Jane (De Muth) Schmitz. The family later moved to Wyoming.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally (Delach) Schmitz, whom he married on November 16, 1947. They were married for 50 years until Sally passed away on March 4, 1998.

Dale is survived by his children Jane (Mike) Murphy and Joe (Cynthia) Schmitz; his grandchildren Anamarie Murphy (Sean Carter), Lisa Schmitz, Sam (Jessica Warren) Schmitz, Kathryn (Matt) DiVincentis and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother William Schmitz of Bozeman, MT, and his sisters Arlene Kane of Sheridan, WY, Mary Jane Schmitz of Leavenworth, KS, Kay Schmitz and Shirlee Tynan, both of Sheridan, WY.

Dale began his service in the US Army in 1939 when he enlisted in the Wyoming National Guard, assigned to a Cavalry Unit. With the start of World War II, his unit was activated for duty in Oregon. Later he served in the Japan Occupation Force. Recently, he was proud and excited to be able to visit the WWII War Memorial in Washington, DC as an Honor Flight Network participant. After leaving the Army, he and Sally returned to Denver where he began his career as a Journeyman Carpenter from 1949 through 1955, and a Boilermaker/ Mechanic at Eaton Metal Products from 1955 until he retired in 1985. As a skilled carpenter, he was very proud of the home he built himself in 1953, where he and Sally raised their family, and he continued to live until his death.

Dale was an active member of the Guardian Angels Catholic Parish for 69 years where he also contributed handyman help during retirement. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Guardian Angels Catholic Church.
