Daniel Fox

August 1, 1952 — March 18, 2024

Denver

A. Daniel Fox, beloved husband, father and brother, passed away peacefully in mid-March at home with his wife and daughter at his side. Dan was 71.

Though Dan and family lived in Denver CO these past 10 years, his was a life of work and adventure around the Western Hemisphere. Dan was a petroleum engineer whose career took him to the North Slope in Alaska (his favorite posting, along with Anchorage), to offshore rigs in California, Trinidad, Venezuela, West Texas and Fort Worth TX. In Fort Worth, he accepted an office position as an oil well planner for EOG Resources, an American energy company. He later transferred to Denver and retired in 2019.

Dan was a quick-witted fireball who believed in living life and loving life to the max. He loved deep sea diving in the North Sea, sky diving over west Texas, and taking numerous cross country road trips. He was all about fast, fun cars and very dear friends. He loved driving his dad’s 912 Porsche in high school. He left Cyndi with a beautiful Aston Martin in the garage that she never liked driving or even riding in! Other fond memories included cross country drives with friend Steve in their Volkswagen bus.

Dan was born in Annapolis MD on Aug 1, 1952, to Albert Daniel Fox and Jane Catherine Donovan Fox. Dan’s dad was in the Navy and a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and retired to Odessa TX. The Fox kids were Navy brats and lived all over — from Paris to southern California. In SoCal, Dan was a life guard and on the high school swim team in Chula Vista. He attended California State University, Long Beach and graduated in 1979 with a degree in accounting.

In 1987, he met his future wife, Cyndi, on a sail boat trip to Cabbage Key FL, arranged by family members who thought the two would be a perfect pair. They were and they married 7 months later. Daughter Samantha Jane (Sammy) was born 9 years later.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents. In addition to his loving wife, Cynthia Plunkett Fox, and his pride and joy, Sammy, of New York City, he is survived by his sister Mary Jane Fox of Crockett CA and sister Elizabeth Fox and niece Kate Matlin and nephew Dan Hanway of Reno NV. On Cyndi’s side, Dan will be greatly missed by Pat Girardi of NYC; Christina Girardi, Nick and Alessandra of Boston MA; Steve Plunkett of Pompano Beach FL; Kerianne, Giacomo and Judah Gamble of Pompano Beach FL; and John Plunkett and Barbara Kuhr of Park City UT.

When he knew his time on earth was short, Dan asked family members to travel to Denver for a big reunion party. Many of them were on the way, when word came that he’d passed at home in the early hours of March 18 with dog Willie nearby. Dan’s party with those invitees was held later that day to great sadness and great stories about his adventure-filled life. The family will remember him in a Celebration of Life later this August, in Bellingham WA.
