Darrel D. Schmidt

Darrel D. Schmidt, 74, passed away at Denver Hospice on July 4, 2019, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Darrel was born in Newton, KS to John D. and Rubina Voth Schmidt and was the 4^th of 5 children. He was raised on the family's farm located in Buhler, KS. Darrel was proud of his agrarian roots and credited his upbringing as the basis for his commitment to faith, family, work and service. He graduated from Buhler High School where he participated in wide-ranging activities including multiple sports, music and band, student government and 4H club, among others. After high school, Darrel attended Bethel College where he played on the football and basketball teams before finishing his undergraduate degree at Kansas State University. While at Kansas State University he also completed a Master's degree in Agricultural Economics.

Professional Life

After graduation Darrel began his professional career working in Dallas for a development firm before relocating to pursue opportunities in the Denver market. Eventually, Darrel followed his entrepreneurial spirit forming his own real estate development firm, Signature Companies, in the late 1970's. Throughout his career, Darrel thoroughly enjoyed his work and was active in a wide array of real estate projects including the development of retail shopping centers, ski area condominiums, medical office buildings and residential real estate lots. His most ambitious and rewarding project was the development, ownership and operation of The Gardens at Columbine, an assisted living and memory care facility located in the Denver Metro area. Darrel made sure he was an active owner and took great strides to create a family environment for the residents and staff.

Personal Life

Darrel and Kathy were high school sweethearts who married on October 2, 1964 and celebrated 54 years together. During their time together they raised two sons, Jarret and Jason. Darrel and Kathy also have 5 grandchildren. Darrel especially loved being the ""Poppy"" to his grandkids and was an integral part of each grandchild's life. Outside of family, Darrel was also passionate about serving the community through charitable endeavors. He served on several organizational boards, most prominently, Colorado Uplift and Urban Youth Ministries, as well as several other Christian organizations. He was also active in youth coaching. In Darrel's spare time, he enjoyed fly fishing in the mountains, with his friends.

Family and friends will remember Darrel for his generosity, commitment to caring for others and his strong faith.
