David Carter

December 3, 1932 — July 31, 2022

Centennial, Colorado

David James Carter, 89, died Sunday, July 31, 2022, at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colorado.

His loving spirit is carried on by his daughters, Adele (Harold Scatterday, III) Carter and Gayle (Dell Brooks) Carter; his brother, Charles Edward (Mary Lou) Carter; his much-loved in-laws, nieces and nephews and their families; his extended family; and treasured friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 66 years, Theta Shirley Downs Carter, his brother, Richard Earl Carter, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Dave was born in Denver, Colorado, on December 3, 1932, to Virgil Edgar and Catherine Kuchler Carter.  He graduated from Denver West High School in 1951. On June 6, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Theta Downs Carter.

In 1952, Dave was commissioned into the United States Navy and proudly served four years as an electrician working onboard the USS Bataan and the USS Philippine Sea. He was stationed primarily in Japan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, earning several medals for his service.

Dave’s civilian career was spent as a Master Electrician, working primarily in commercial construction.  He retired as an electrician with the General Services Administration (GSA). He was a 60-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

Dave and Theta shared a love of visiting with and entertaining friends and family.  They enjoyed traveling – especially to various cities for the reunions of Dave’s Navy shipmates. They also enjoyed their membership in WISE genealogy group and volunteering at their church.  A proud Colorado native, Dave enjoyed camping, hiking and fishing in Colorado’s mountains. He was a talented artist: he loved oil painting, charcoal drawing, wood carving and photography. He also enjoyed the arts, especially music, theater and visiting museums. He was an avid reader and life-long learner.

Dave was loved and cherished by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his strength, his kindness, his sense of humor and his loving heart.

The family extends thanks and heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful health care workers and staff at Orchard Park Health Care Center for the professional, kind-hearted and loving care provided to Dave.
