David Gerwig, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 of natural causes. He was 92 years old.
Dave was born on June 7, 1929 in Denver, Colorado and continued to live in the Denver area until June of 2000 when he moved to Greeley, CO.
He served in the Naval Reserves before enlisting in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany in the early 1950s. In April of 1952, he was hired by the Denver Fire Department where he enjoyed a long and successful career as he rose through the ranks to retire as a Division Chief In Charge of Operations in January of 1988.
Dave met Patricia Witzke (Pat) at North Presbyterian Church in Denver in early 1957 and they were married on June 10 of that same year. Dave and Pat shared much love, raised a family and enjoyed 64 years together.
Dave had many hobbies throughout his life. He was an avid photographer, even in his childhood, and preferred taking slides instead of snapshots. This was a blessing for his family who now have thousands of photos to look back on and remember good times.
Dave’s family remembers that he always had a very orderly and well equipped shop area in the basement of every house he lived in. He could fix most everything that broke and could be counted on to do high quality home repairs and renovations. He had several other hobbies as well. He loved to fish and camp in the Colorado Rockies, first in a large tent and later in a camper. While his family was young there were many wonderful trips to National Parks and fun locations all over the western and southwestern United States and Canada as well, all in the family’s Roadrunner travel trailer. Later, with their family grown, Dave and Pat enjoyed traveling together to many exciting destinations, always returning home with cute gifts for their grandchildren and souvenirs for their kids. They also had a place in Buena Vista, CO where they spent many summers relaxing and visiting with friends.
Dave loved to play golf with Pat and friends who also enjoyed the sport and generally appreciated time spent with friends throughout his life. As he grew older, he often said how important his family was to him.
Dave is survived by his wife Pat Gerwig (Greeley, CO) and by his daughter Lynn Mossbrucker (Mike Burgess) of Littleton,CO and two sons Jim Gerwig (Mardy) of Greeley, CO and John Gerwig of Wellington, CO. He also had nine grandchildren, Matthew (Cassie) Mossbrucker, Erin (Jeremy) Haight, Annie (Mike) Boes, Alex (Melba) Mossbrucker, Will (Jessica) Mossbrucker, Tim Mossbrucker, Katy Gerwig-Dawes (Will Dawes), Jeffery Gerwig and Rebecca Gerwig.
He was looking forward to meeting his 16th great grandchild in April.
