Officer David C. Hutchings of the Aurora Police Department passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 701 Oakwood Drive in Castle Rock, Colorado. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock. David was born in Tullahoma, Tennessee on May 7, 1970. He graduated from Gateway High School in Aurora, Colorado and continued his education studying Music Composition at both Brigham Young University-Idaho and the University of Utah. David was married to Amber E. Hutchings (Mattison) on January 3, 1992, they were married for 24 years. Together they have four children: Joshua David (21), Abigail Eve (20), Autumn Anneliesa (18), and Ellie Reagan (12). He became a Police Officer for the City of Aurora in 2003, where he received numerous awards and distinctions. Most notably he was honored with the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2012 for his work with refugees in the city's most dangerous neighborhoods. Officer Hutchings devoted himself to serving the people in his area, regardless of their language or where they came from. He learned to speak fluent Spanish while serving a mission in Washington D.C. for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, working with people from nearly every Spanish speaking country in the world. He constantly strived to learn the customs of other cultures so that he could better interact with all the citizens of Aurora. As a Police Area Representative, David founded the Hispanic Business Alliance as well as a multicultural Neighborhood Watch program and expanded the program to help immigrants and refugees assimilate into American culture while teaching them that they could trust and count on the Police. David was three times invited by the Costa Rican Government to deliver presentations on crisis intervention, victim's services, community outreach, active shooter scenarios and police response to suicide. In 2012, David was selected for an assignment to the Electronic Support Section and as a SWAT tech. David became an expert in using technology to impact crime in Aurora. As a technology expert, David taught Police technology classes on a regional and national level. David was an accomplished musician and composer, playing with Bands like Buckner Funkenjazz, Oversoul'd and The Byron Shaw Projex. He was known as one of the best keyboard players in the state. He loved the outdoors, especially the mountains. He loved rock climbing, mountain biking and fly fishing. David is survived by his four children; his parents Calvin and Sherrie Hutchings; his siblings Shelley Sims, Cammie Hussey (Michael), Cameron Hutchings (Michelle), Jared Hutchings (Andrea), Jeremy Hutchings (Terra); his nieces and nephews and the rest of his family and friends. He is greatly missed by all who knew him.
