It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Songer Pfoff, MD on September 4, 2022. David was born in Rockford, Illinois and grew up in Rochelle, Illinois. He is survived by his beloved wife Ruth, daughters, Rebecca Pfoff (Juan Zamora), Jacqueline Brown (Stephen Brown) and Alexea Rhodes (Stuart Rhodes), granddaughters Madeline and Katie, and sister Margaret Reschetz of St. Louis, MO, as well as numerous nieces, cousins, and brothers and sisters in law.
David enlisted in the Army and was a proud member of the 101st Airborne Division, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and used the GI bill to attend and graduate from MacMurray College in Jackson, Illinois. He then went on to graduate from the University of St. Louis Medical School. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at St John’s Mercy Hospital where he met and married Ruth. He had visited and fell in love with Colorado and was able to fulfill his true calling when he was accepted into the Ophthalmology Residency program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver.
He went on to pioneer intraocular cataract surgical procedures, building and maintaining a private practice in Denver, Colorado. He was passionate about teaching others and was extremely proud to serve as a Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. During that time, Dr. Pfoff trained many of the Medical School’s ophthalmology residents in techniques he developed and perfected over his 50-year career.
His teaching extended around the globe, lecturing at Ophthalmology conferences across the US, Europe and Asia, including an invitation from the Beijing University Hospital to teach his procedures to their students. For the past 13 years, he practiced and taught the Ophthalmology residents at the Bellevue-Offutt Air Force Base, as a member of the 55th Medical Group in the Ehrling Bergquist Clinic in Bellevue, NE.
Dr. Pfoff was also very proud of his association with the Northwest Regional Medical Center of Goodland, KS. He travelled weekly to offer ophthalmology care and surgery to the community’s residents for over 20 years. He was also instrumental in bringing care to rural areas of Mexico and Guatemala with private teams of eye surgeons, and eventually Project Cure, in conjunction with the Boulder Community Hospital.
A member of many professional and philanthropic organizations, including the American Society of Cataract Surgeons, the Colorado Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Rotary Club Southeast, and Cherry Hills Community Church, David lived a life of service to others.
He was an avid photographer, skier, hiker, bicyclist, pilot, camper, and member of the choir at Cherry Hills Community where he had the honor of serving as a church elder.
A memorial service will be held Saturday October 1, 2022, 10:30am in the Dixon Chapel at Cherry Hills Community Church, 3900 Grace Blvd, Highlands Ranch, CO 80126. A reception will follow immediately after.
