David Jay Schoen Jr.

May 11, 1937 — October 17, 2019

David Jay Schoen, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on October 17th, 2019. Born May 11, 1937 to Marie Amelia Morris and David J. Schoen, Sr. who preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Tom Jackson and sisters Rose Sabell, Marge Shoe, and MaryAnn From.

He is survived by his wife of 59 ½ years, Karen J. Schoen (Claxton) his son David Schoen, IV (Kathy) and his daughter Kari Schoen as well as his beautiful granddaughters, Kaylyn Schoen and Joslyn Schoen. He is also survived by nephew Jerry Snow (Candice), nieces Kathie Aspenwall, Cindy Keily (Jerry), Brenda Strong, and Michelle Sturgell (Fred) as well as many great-nieces and nephews.

Dave attended West High School where he ran track, played football, served as sports editor for the school newspaper as well as being part of the National Honor Society. He was awarded the Howard C. Wagner award for being the athlete with the highest scholastic standing. He graduated from West High School in 1954 and entered in to Armed Service in 1955. He served two years in the Army as part of the Honor Guard and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on October 17, 1957. Following his service, he became a pipefitter apprentice and joined Natkin & Co. where he devoted 30+ years as a pipefitter, project estimator, and project manager. Early in his career, he participated in the national pipefitter apprentice competition at Purdue University where he placed 2nd in the Nation. In the early to mid-80's Dave served two terms as President of the Colorado Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors. He spent his final professional years at Trautman & Shreve. During his career, he played an integral role in the implementation of plumbing and heating systems in many of Denver area's famous buildings and venues. Following a long and successful career, he retired in 2005 and began his ""second career"" as a handyman. Dave's Home Services was known around the Southern Gables neighborhood and beyond for his ethics, quality work, and quite frankly, cheap prices! Working and keeping his hands busy was his passion and that is where he received the most reward. He could do anything he set his mind to whether it is building a bird house or the family cabin and if he didn't know how to do it, he figured it out. He loved helping others and was always there to lend a helping hand.

Dave met Karen in high school but they didn't start dating until after he had returned from service. He would frequently come watch her while she bowled with her friends at Pearl Mack. He knew she was the one and in March 1960, on a cold snowy day, they were married. Little did they know what a ride the next 60 years would be as they shared the joys of raising their children, building new homes and the family cabin, traveling, and being with friends and family. He so loved being with his family. He also loved spending time at his summer home on Lake Granby, working on the never ending ""Honey-Do"" list, attending many Bronco games which has always been a love/hate relationship, leaving his legacy at the SW Little League fields, attending lunches with his Natkin buds, and the many, many wonderful vacations spanning the globe from the Continental US + Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Thailand.

He touched so many lives, his life was full, and his presence will be greatly missed.

Funeral Services will take place at Horan & McConaty at 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd. on Thursday October 31st, at 10am. Reception to follow immediately at the same location. Committal ceremony at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area “A”.
