David Strang

February 28, 1936 — October 24, 2021

Aurora, CO

David Wayland Strang, 85, passed on Sunday, October 24, 2021, from congestive heart failure. David was born February 28, 1936, in Boston, MA to Dr. Martin Tiernan and Seichu Atyse (deceased). He grew up in Elmira, NY where he graduated from Elmira Free Academy in 1953. He went on to attend college at Syracuse University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering followed by a Master’s in Management Science from the Stevens Institute of Technology.

David’s career included working as a civilian for the US Army, first at Picatinny Arsenal, NJ followed by his distinguished 25-year career at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA) in Commerce City, CO. David retired in 1998 after overseeing the environmental cleanup efforts at RMA, which included over 31 projects to address contamination of the Arsenal soil, groundwater, and structures.

David loved classical music and played the piano beautifully. His children recall waking up early on Saturday mornings to his rendition of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor. He loved playing golf with his sons and stayed in shape by playing tennis for many years. David was also an avid stock researcher, reading Barron’s and financial books to gain knowledge. He also enjoyed reading history books. His friends and family also recall how much he loved dancing with his beautiful wife, Lee, every chance he could find.

David is remembered for rubbing his hands together when he was happy (which was often); was fond of toasting, “To The Family” at any dinner gathering; he sometimes made a snack of “hamburg and corn” for himself (and his children) after a late night out; and when asked a simple question David often provided a long, complicated answer (oftentimes referred to by his children as a lecture) in lieu of a simpler response (definitely the engineer in him).

David is survived by his wife Londette Lee Strang; his sons Stewart (Julie) Strang, David (Christine) Strang, Brent (Brenda) Stifflear, Daniel Stifflear, and Jim (Kristen) Stifflear; his daughters Ann (Ben) Johansen, Janet Stifflear, Carolyn (Kevin) Stifflear, and Dawn (Mike) Murphy. David had 16 beloved grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
