Dean R. Sather passed away at his home in Broomfield on March 3rd at the age of 80. Dean had a full and robust life that began in Hibbing as the son of Christian O. and Mabel Sather. As a communicant of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, he achieved the rank of Eagle in the Church's Boy Scout Troop #17. After graduating from Hibbing High School in 1947 and the University of Denver, Dean enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was promoted to Captain w/distinction as an F-84 fighter bomber pilot during the Korean War. Following his discharge, Dean joined United Air Lines and again rose to Captain over a distinguished 30 year career. After retiring, he continued with his passion for flying - piloting his own plane and assisting in the development of advanced programs to bring a higher degree of realism to flight and combat simulations for pilot training and the home computer. He celebrated his 80th birthday in Texas by getting a Certificate of Merit for flying an aerobatic plane in a mock aerial battle and shooting down his opponent. Though Dean never married, he was loved for his sense of family and his devotion and generosity to those who knew him. HIs is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Danni (Ray), a brother Charles (Lise), five nieces and nephews, nine grand-nieces and nephews and close friend Shirley Self and her family. A military memorial service is planned for June 18, 2010, 11:15AM, Staging Area ""C"" at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
