Deke was born in Denver, Colorado on April 16, 1946 to Althea (Gardner) and Paul Cook. His parents moved often, so Deke grew up in several places: Colorado, Louisiana, Hawaii, and Mexico City, to name a few. Moving often taught Deke to make friends, and hold on to them forever. Deke had a love of the outdoors. He had his circle of friends who he rock and ice climbed with, he joined a bicycling club, and he loved hiking, camping, and skiing with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Catherine; his son Brian Cook and Brian’s sons Ian (Krystal) and Nathan; his son Nicholas (Lorie) Cook and Nick’s sons Adrian and Dominick, Nick’s daughter Cristy (Moises Vargas), and stepson Jon Serrano; his daughter Laura (Stephen) Ward and grandsons Ivan and Maxim, and granddaughters Mila and Katya; Cristy and Adrian’s brother Julian Tapia; foster daughter Allison (Black) Garcia; and five great grandchildren. Deke is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, Deke died peacefully at home January 14, 2023 surrounded by his family. A Funeral Service will be held April 4, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4380 Utica St., Denver, Colorado 80212. A reception at the parish center will follow the service.
