Dennis Ray Dougherty

April 22, 1938 — March 26, 2017

Dennis Dougherty, age 78, of Lakewood, CO, formerly of Evergreen, CO and Des Moines, IA, passed away on March 26th surrounded by family after a hard fought battle against cancer. Dennis was born in Guthrie Center, IA to Ray Luckinbill and Norma Hastings, and later adopted by John Dougherty. He graduated from East High School in 1957, and later attended Drake University, The American Institute of Banking, and the Northwestern University Graduate School of Banking. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve from 1955 to 1963. Denny never retired. He began his career in banking in 1961 with Banker's Trust in Des Moines, IA and continued in the financial industry as a mortgage banker, most recently with Eagle Home Mortgage in Lakewood, CO. He was a member of the following fraternal organizations: East Gate Lodge #630, Scottish Rite Masonry 32, and Za-Ga-Zig Temple. Dennis was a 50-year member of East Gate Masonic Lodge No. 630. Dennis also volunteered his time with various organizations: West Des Moines Parks Board, Foothills Parks and Recreation Board, West Chamber, and Lakewood on Parade. Dennis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy (Kissner) Dougherty, daughters Michelle Towers (Jerry) of Johnston, IA and Kris Dougherty (Chris Jones) of Lakewood, CO, and his grandchildren Logan and Haylee Towers. Additionally, he is survived by his sister-in-law Lynda Shields (John) of Earlham, IA, niece Kim Mease (Chad) of Urbandale, IA, nephew Jeffrey Shields of Des Moines, IA, great-niece Addison Mease and great-nephew Brecken Mease. Not to be forgotten his beloved Chow Chow Chelsey. He is preceded in death by his mother Norma Hastings Dougherty, his adopted father John Dougherty, and his birth father Ray Luckinbill. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, April 3rd at 2PM, at Mile Hi Church 9077 W. Alameda Avenue, Lakewood, CO 80226. A memorial is also being planned for Des Moines, Iowa in June 2017. Memorial donations in Dennis's honor are suggested to Shriners Hospitals for Children or Charity of Choice.
