Derick Kwasi Glymin, age 71, of Cherry Hills Village, Colorado, passed away on July 3, 2024. He was born August 26, 1952, to Barton Sr. and Mispah Glymin in Ghana, and spent his formative years there. In 1971 he came to the U.S. for higher education and remained in the U.S. for the rest of his life. In 1974, he was employed by Mobil Oil Company as a petroleum engineer and in 1979 was promoted to the Special Projects team in Denver, doing economic evaluations of all acquisitions and divestitures worldwide. In 1981, he became Vice President of Ocelot Oil Company, and in 1985 acquired their assets and started his own successful independent oil company, Cowry Enterprises Ltd.
Kwasi, as he was known in Ghana, attended secondary school at Adisadel College in Ghana. He was an excellent student, good athlete, and played piano in the school band. He was caring and generous, often giving away his clothes to those who needed them. From 1970-71, he was Jubilee House Prefect, a position of honor. He and his brother Kujo traveled to Switzerland on business trips with their father during summer vacations. Those experiences impacted his world view and future aspirations. In 1971 he graduated from Adisadel College and came the U.S. to study at the University of Southern California, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in petroleum engineering and a master’s degree in engineering management.
Kwasi was known as Derick in the U.S. In 1971, he married Betty Ogleton, known as Toni by family and friends. Her daughter, Stacey, also won his heart and a few years later he legally gave her his name, too. In 1978, their son Dzifa, was born, The family moved to Englewood, Colorado in 1979., where their daughter Dela was born in 1981. Everyone who met him was charmed by his smile, and kind, gentle manner. He was very much a family man and took them to Ghana regularly to know their extended family and his culture. In the mid-nineties, he took up ballroom dancing which he continued until his last days. He loved to travel and traveled with Toni to all but 2 continents (Antarctica and Australia). In 2002, he founded the Ewe Association of Colorado, a Ghanaian cultural organization, which provides support and Ghanain cultural experiences for the large Ghanaian community in metro Denver.
Derick is survived by his wife, Toni; son, Dzifa (Katie) Glymin, and daughter, Dela (Atli) Steinthorsson; 4 grandsons, Quintin, Jayden, Landon, and Dexter; 1 granddaughter Laila; 4 brothers, Barton Jr. (Mawuli) Glymin, Kujo (Risi) Glymin, Yaw (Lisa) Glymin, Kobla (Shula) Glymin; 2 sisters, Victoria Abrokwa, and Linda Nwosu; and 9 nephews and 11 nieces. Derick was preceded in death by his parents, Barton Sr. and Mispah Glymin, brother Wilcox (Carol) Glymin, sister Sophia Glymin, and daughter Stacey Javazon.
