Donald Hayman, 89, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on February 2nd, 2024. He was born September 28th, 1934, in North Andover, Massachusetts to William and Maria Jackson Hayman.
Don embarked on life’s journey in a home where the only sparks were from candles and closed the circuit as an electrician after nearly half a century at the University of Miami. From stages of the Ring Theater, where he first rigged lights, to ensuring the safety and computer systems didn’t miss a beat, Don was the University’s unsung luminary.
His career was only one facet of his radiant life. Don had a love for geo-caching and camping with his children and grandchildren, imparting in them the spark of adventure and insatiable curiosity. Indoors, he was a conductor of model trains, orchestrating the comings and goings of locomotives with the precision of a maestro, all while crackling over the HAM radio waves, connecting with fellow enthusiasts as far and wide as his signals could reach.
An ardent animal lover, Don’s home was never without the purring of a cat, each one finding in him a gentle and kind-hearted human. His laugh was infectious, spreading warmth and joy faster than wildfire. He had a knack for delivering punchlines with the timing of a seasoned comedian, ensuring that laughter was a constant backdrop to his life.
His passion for the University of Miami was not just professional but personal, often shared in conversations with his children and grandchildren, alongside watching exciting NASCAR races and football games. These moments, now cherished memories, showcased the depth of his love and pride for his family.
Don leaves behind a legacy as vibrant as the circuits he once tended to, and a family grateful for the light he brought into their lives. His journey from a candle-lit beginning to a life that shone brightly in so many ways is a testament to his incredible journey and the lives he touched along the way. Don's story is a reminder that it's not just about where we start, but how we choose to illuminate the path we travel.
Donald is survived by his wife, Judith Margaret Hayman (née Schwartz); daughter Jeanette and her husband Joseph Heeb, their children and grandchildren Caroline Hicks (husband Travis, son Dallen), Jessica Blasucci (husband Thomas, children Sophia, Avery, and Emmet), Sarah Wells (husband David, children Jacob, Caleb, and Micah), Joseph M.
