Our loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Donald Lee Haynie, died at home on Thursday, June 5, 2008. He was born on March 31, 1925 in Manassa, Colorado, to Winfred Stover Haynie and Sara Cloe Rogers Haynie. Donald was the oldest of five children: Ella Brothers, Ralph (deceased), Cornell, and Roger. On March 7, 1944, he married Hazel Henrietta Thomas, his childhood sweetheart. Together they had seven children, 20 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Donald was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Lee Haynie, and is survived by his wife, Hazel, and six children, Kenneth (spouse, Nancy), Thomas (Kathy), John, Gary (Janna), Carl (Diana), and Reva (John Corrigan). During World War II, he served in the European Theater as a combat rifleman in the 14th Armored Infantry Division, earning a Bronze Star for valor and rising to the rank of company First Sergeant. Donald graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1948 and Master of Science in 1950. Donald's career began as an internal auditor with General Electric at the Hanford Atomic Energy Works in Richland, Washington. He worked for The Denver Post for two decades, serving mostly as Controller but also as Assistant Treasurer. At the time of his death, he worked as an Adjunct Professor of Accounting at Regis University. Donald Haynie was a dedicated church worker and served three times as a Bishop in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also served as a Sealer in the Denver Colorado Temple. Donald was a great believer in higher education and took pride in the educational accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, which include numerous degrees from prestigious institutions. These, and other family events, were chronicled by him in a family history which eventually exceeded 3000 written pages. Donald was well liked by those who knew him, not least for his gentleness and humor. His life was characterized by hard work and heavy responsibility, which he bore without complaint. He was the faithful servant of his fellow man and the unfailing supporter of his wife and family. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 10th, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Horan & McConaty, 3101 So.
