It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Lee Hopkins on April 8th, 2025 at his home in Thornton, Colorado. Donald Lee Hopkins was born on July 4th, 1934 in Redding, Kansas.
Don went to Washburn Rural High School in Topeka, Kansas. He was a great student and participated in basketball, baseball, and band. In 1951, as a freshman, his baseball team was the State Champions and that team was later inducted into the Washburn Rural High School Sports Hall of Fame. After graduation, he went to work for Santa Fe Railroad, starting on the tracks then advanced to the offices. In the interim, he took college classes for computer skills and then had various jobs working with computers. His final job was working at NEC until retirement in 1996. After retirement, he became a master gardener in which he took pride in his lawn. He volunteered as a police victim advocate. He started volunteering at the St. Anthony's North hospital after retiring in 1996 and continued until 2025. Don has a passion for people and sponsored children in Ethiopia.
He is survived by Cleta Hopkins (Flannagan) his wife, his son Stephen and wife Stephany Hopkins, his son Bill and wife Mary Hopkins, his son Scott and wife Karen Hopkins, 10 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Maureen Hopkins, and his granddaughter, Cherie Hopkins.
Viewing is Tuesday, April 15 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm at Horan & McConaty, located at 9998 Grant Street in Thornton, Colorado 80229.
The Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, April 16th, 2025 with a viewing at 10 am, followed by a service at 11:00 am at Thrive Church located at 2720 West 92nd Avenue, Federal Heights, CO 80260.
Burial will take place at 3:00 pm, at Foothills Gardens of Memory, located at 14241 North 107th Street, Longmont, CO 80504.
Memorials may be made to Donate Money to Thrive for the school in Ethiopia.
