Donald Schierling

August 18, 1934 — February 12, 2021

Donald Dexter Schierling, age 86, died peacefully February 12, 2021. He was born August 18, 1934, in Henderson Nebraska to Jake and Nettie Schierling. He married Elvira Edgier on June 20, 1960.  They had 60 wonderful years together.
Don’s life was a living example for others.  All who knew him will never forget him.
Don’s life was dedicated to social and economic justice, advocating for peace and modeling humility. Don was not overly “evangelical” about his faith, choosing to share his faith through his actions and the stories of his life’s journeys. When Don shared his life stories they were always filled with passion for others and emphasizing the good in people. Don’s career path represents his commitment to doing good in the world. Through his work and life choices, he touched many people’s lives.
Don’s was proud and humbled by his many life experiences.  His accomplishments include alternative service with PAX, a program through Mennonite Central Committee, surviving countries post World War II with reconstruction projects. Co- founder of Brother’s Redevelopment Inc, in 1970, Don was also involved in helping revitalize neighborhoods through strategic lending and working for a nonprofit that encouraged self- sufficiency in Africa, Asia and Central America.
Don and his wife Elvira traveled the world with many friends later in life.
Don was recognized trough AARP for being a Caregiver for his wife, Elvira for over 10 years.
He was the loving and devoted husband to Elvira Schierling, the loving father of Dawn Schierling-Harder and her husband Kevin Harder, and Sonja Schierling and the loving grandpa of Darren Harder and Travis Harder. And a special grandpa to Jolene and JoVanni Rogers.
He will join his wife, Elvira Schierling, his parents Jake and Nettie Schierling, his sisters Betty Scott, and Viola Friesen, his brother Carl Schierling, and many, many friends in heaven.
The family asks in lieu of flowers donations be made in memory of Don to Brother’s Redevelopment Inc., or Glennon Heights Mennonite Church.

Dad…………Did you ever know that your my hero? And everything I wish I could be…I could fly higher than an eagle….for you are the wind beneath my wings.
