Doris was born March 20, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois to Leo and Maybelle McVey. She spent her early years in Chicago but then moved to New York, Detroit and then back to New York. She attended Dunbarton College of the Holy Cross in Washington, D.C. from which graduated in 1947.
In 1948 she married Dave Higgins and together they had four children—Sue, Dave, Denise and Gerry. In 1964, Dave was transferred to Denver and so the family moved to Colorado and joined All Souls Catholic Parish at that time. Doris enjoyed seeing her four children marry, Sue to Dan Troxel, Dave to Stephanie Manning, Denise to Joe Petraglia and Gerry to Joyce Rojo. She was also blessed with seven grandchildren, Bridget Troxel Peck (Jeff), Jim Troxel, Tony Petraglia (Jenn), Nick Petraglia (Kiki), Katie Petraglia Shepka (Zack), Eric Higgins (Akayla) and Sean Higgins (Jaunita).
In 1965, Doris began teaching third grade at All Souls. She did this until her retirement in 1986. She was also a member of the choir and volunteered for several activities at church. She was a lector at the 8:15 weekly mass for years and was Eucharistic minister. Doris was part of the All Souls group that went to Holy Ghost every week to make sandwiches for the poor, even taking two eighth grade students to help each week.
Doris enjoyed spending time with her family. She loved having the family over for all holiday celebrations. When she first retired, she would have her daughters and grandchildren over for tea after school on Fridays. This morphed into Friday lunches first with Nick and the others as they began jobs and would come during lunch. This grew as children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would all meet for lunch at GG’s. This continued until last summer. Her great grandchildren called her GG. The five great grandchildren are Addison Peck, AJ Peck, Ava Petraglia, Penny Petraglia and Xander Shepka. Doris was the matriarch of her family, the clearing house of all information. She will be missed by many.
