Doris Karsell, 87, of Lakewood, Colorado, died Friday, March 26, at Villa Manor Care Center. Born in 1922 in Gordon, Nebraska, she graduated from East High School in Denver. She earned a BFA from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Doris worked as a freelance artist during her years in Louisville, Kentucky, and Conway, Massachusetts, producing numerous murals and other works through public and private commissions. She produced a series of inspirational greeting cards, Illuminated Manuscripts for Our Time, adding to the set as recently as 2005. Doris was married to Thomas Galloway Karsell, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who preceded her in death in 1975. She is survived by a son, William Karsell, and daughter-in-law, Deborah Karsell, both of Lakewood; a daughter, Elizabeth Frick, and son-in-law, Fred Frick, both of Indianapolis; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Doris died as gracefully as she lived, surrounded by her family. She is remembered for her poise, courage, humor, and beneficence.
