Dorothy Campbell

July 15, 1936 — March 9, 2021

Dorothy M. Campbell, 84, passed away gently at home on March 9, 2021.

Dorothy was born July 15, 1936, in Waco, TX, to Hugh (Hack) and Alva Hackleman, and spent her childhood in Tulsa, OK.  Dorothy excelled at academics and athletics, and began her lifelong dedication to young people as a summer camp counselor.  She attended Monticello College in Godfrey, IL, and graduated with honors from the University of Oklahoma.

After graduation, Dorothy boldly moved to Denver, CO, and secured a teaching position at Horace Mann Junior High School.  In 1959, she met, fell in love with, and married fellow teacher and future attorney Richard (Dick) Campbell.  After law school, Dick joined the FBI as a special agent and Dorothy was both rock and glue as they moved frequently with their young children.

Dick and Dorothy returned to Denver in 1972.  Dorothy served on the Board of Directors for Mount St. Vincent Home and the Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado. Dorothy and Dick shared a commitment to Catholic education and actively supported Regis Jesuit High School, Arrupe Jesuit High School, Seeds of Hope, and others.

Dorothy was an avid reader and gardener and a formidable tennis player and golfer.  She had a ready laugh, sharp wit and a deep appreciation for art and beauty.  She served as a docent at the Denver Art Museum for more than 25 years.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her daughter, Kathleen Campbell, her parents, her sisters, Jo Jo Eaton and Betty Bryden, and her brother-in-law, Dan Campbell.  She is survived by her husband, her children, Terri, Rick, Jim and Debbie, her grandchildren, Mike, Danny, Jamie, Meghan and Claire, and her beloved nieces and nephews.

The Mass of the Resurrection for Dorothy will be Thursday, March 18 at 11:30 a.m. at Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, 830 Elm St., Denver, CO 80220, immediately followed by private burial services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Daniel P. Campbell Scholarship, for students of single parents with financial need, at Regis Jesuit High School , the Campbell Family Scholarship at Arrupe Jesuit High School and the Regis University Arrupe Annual Scholarship.
