Dorothy J. "Dotty" Geer

Dorothy “Dotty” Jean Geer, age 80, passed away at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, CO, on January 13, 2025. She was a 1962 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver, Colorado. She attended Platte Valley Bible College in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Dorothy worked as a dental assistant before meeting the love of her life, Edward O. Geer, who was a judge in Denver for many years. They were married in 1981 in Lexington, Kentucky. Dorothy and Ed later owned and operated Geer Horse Farms, Inc., in Lexington, KY.

Dorothy’s life was full of love, compassion, and devotion to both her family and her faith. Born in Norman, Oklahoma, on May 8, 1944, at the United States Naval Hospital, she lived a life centered on relationships and community. Her deep affection for her daughter and the joy she shared with her husband through their trips to Ohio and Kentucky reflect her strong family ties.

Her involvement with horses, specifically in the sport of harness racing, is a unique part of her story. The horses, pulling sulkies and racing at Centennial Race Track in Littleton, CO, added a distinct adventure to her life. But beyond the horses, Dorothy's love for animals was boundless—whether it was caring for stray cats, her beloved dogs or rescuing dogs in need, she had a heart for all creatures. Her care extended even to the groundhogs she tried to save near the bike trail, showing her gentle spirit toward all living beings.

Dorothy lived at Emerald Estates, where she lived as Dorothy and her dog Toto, does this remind you of a story with a yellow brick road? She reflected the same nurturing nature, not just for animals but for people as well. Teaching Sunday School, where the children affectionately called her "Grandma Dorothy," highlighted her deep impact on others, especially through her loving presence and her passion for sharing the love of Jesus. Her involvement with two churches shows a life devoted to faith and outreach, and her desire to witness to others, sharing the message of hope she held so dearly, was likely a big part of her daily life.

Dorothy’s musical talent, particularly her love for playing the accordion and singing praises, was another way she expressed her faith and joy in life. She had a lovely voice, and it seems like her songs and teachings resonated with everyone she met.

Overall, Dorothy has been a woman who lived her life with grace, kindness, and a devotion to both her family and her community. The love she gave to others, the animals she cared for, and her steadfast faith in Jesus shaped the world around her.

Dorothy was so personable that her friends and others in the community where like family in her life. Multiple people considered her a grandmother to them. She will be dearly missed by family, friends, neighbors and even people she shopped and did business with.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Edward O. Geer; her daughter, Rhonda Lynne Schanaman Stevenson; and her three grandsons, Christopher John Stevenson, Joseph Micah Stevenson, and David Samuel Stevenson. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Betty R. Franz and William H. Franz Jr.; her sister, Linda Kay Franz; cousin, Frances H. Sgarlatti; and multiple aunts and uncles.

Dorothy is survived by her brother, William H. Franz III of Lakewood, CO; her sister, Karla R. Weaver (&Larry) of Mt. Vernon, MO; and great-grandchildren: Christopher’s children, Trey Taylor Stevenson of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Christian Samuel Stevenson, and Winter Rosie Stevenson, both of Oklahoma; Cooper Daniel Stevenson of Indiana; Joseph’s children, Jordon David Stevenson and Josie Leanne Stevenson, both of Mt. Vernon, MO; and David’s daughter, Molly Skye Stevenson of Nixa, MO. Dorothy is also survived by her aunt, Vera Boyd of Westminster, CO; cousins Mary Ziller (& Wolfgang) of Ardmore, PA; Anthony Sgarlatti (& Susan) of Peoria, AZ; Veronica Bryant (& Robert) of Erie, CO; as well as two nieces, Krystal L. Russell (& Mathew) of Republic, MO, and Kimberly Brown of Mt. Vernon, MO; two great-nephews, Alexander A.Russell and Nicholas O.Russell, both of Republic, MO; and numerous first, second, and third cousins.

A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 beginning at 10:00 AM with the Funeral Service to begin at 11:00AM, both at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3101 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Lakewood.

The Interment will immediately follow at 12:30 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver, Colorado where Dotty will be laid to rest with her late husband.
