Dorothy A. McCorriston

December 5, 1922 — October 11, 2011

Dorothy Allison McCorriston was born on December 5, 1922 to Daniel Moore Fisk and Allison Baker Shaver. Her parents were educators, and the family soon moved to Philadelphia, PA where her father taught history at Temple University. Dorothy grew up in Philadelphia, primarily, but her most treasured time as a young girl was the summers spent in Colorado. She loved the mountains and knew that one day she would make her home in Colorado. As a young woman during the war, she worked in the manufacturing plant of E.G. Budd Manufacturing building fighter plane engines. A ""Rosie the Riveter"" woman supporting the war effort at home, as soon as the war was over, she had to return to the secretarial pool. She did not appreciate the pay cut. Soon after the war, she met the young soldier she would marry. Hugh McCorriston (Mac) was recently returned from overseas; and like young people everywhere, they married and started their contribution to the baby boom. Their first two daughters were born in Pennsylvania. But, Dorothy, intent on her goal to get to Colorado, soon convinced her husband that moving west would be good for their family. The young family settled in Kansas for a time, where they added three more daughters to their family. But, Dorothy always confident that she would ultimately get to Colorado encouraged her husband to apply for jobs in Denver. In 1962 her dream was realized, and her husband obtained a position with the Department of Defense and they moved to Littleton, CO. Dorothy spent many years raising her family, working as a secretary and enjoying the beautiful mountains of Colorado. She loved her family of five girls, and as her girls grew, married and began their own families, she extended that love to her grandchildren. Dorothy was predeceased on July 3, 1992 by her husband of 46 years, Hugh. She is survived by her five daughters, Jean Root (John), Ann Reich (Dan), Mary McCorriston, Sheila Premer (Mike) and Gale Sustad (Dean). She is blessed with ten grandchildren, Laura Premer, Sarah Root Stone (Jon), Allison Baumann Kirkwood (Jarrett), Christine Reich Miller (Danny), Stephen Root, Lesley Premer, Brian Reich, Jennifer Sustad, Greg Sustad and Jared Sustad. She also has four great grandchildren. Dorothy passed away at the Life Care Center of Littleton on October 11 after a long illness. Visitation will be held, Monday, October 17, from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M., at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 5303 East County Line Road, in Centennial, Colorado. She will be buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery ~ Pavilion 'A', 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, in Denver after a Mass of the Christian Burial at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 6853 South Prince Street, in Littleton on Tuesday, October 18 at 10:30 A.M Please share your memories of Dorothy and condolences with her family by signing the guestbook.
