Dorothy Mae McVey was born June 1, 1914 in Denver, Colorado to Robert Joseph and Maggie Madeline Maxey. She was the third oldest born to this union of nine children. As a child, Dorothy was always helping her mother make a living. She also remembered listening to the great stories about her grandmother who was a restaurant owner and a great cook. Dorothy began her formal education in the Denver Public Schools and attended Emily Griffin Opportunity School to enhance her passion for sewing. Dorothy joined Shorter AME Methodist Church were she gave her earlier life to Christ and worked with the missionary and usher board until she became ill in 1979, but continued to praise the Lord. On March 11, 1936, Dorothy was united in marriage to Ralph Costello McVey. They were married for sixty-three years until his death February 20, 2000. From this union were born four children. As her children entered school, she took her gift of making clothes and doing alterations into downtown Denver department stores. She did domestic service work and baby sitting for grandchildren, great grandchildren and adopted children and truly a mother to all. She was always known as a hard worker and dedicated to her family. Dorothy enjoyed spending quality time with her family and friends, sewing for those she loved, singing, listening to music and cooking holiday meals. Dorothy's beautiful smile, her laughter, and her love and kindness will be deeply missed. Dorothy Mae McVey departed this life and passed into the Lord's embrace on February 8, 2007.
