Dorothy Ann Soukup

Dorothy Ann Soukup, 85, passed away November 24, 2013 at the Silverado Senior Living facility in Arvada, Colorado. She was born on January 11, 1928 in Castleton, Kansas (now under Cheney Reservoir) to John W. and Mabel E. (Norton) Nicklaus. An only child, Dorothy grew up on a farm south of Haven, Kansas. She graduated from Haven High School in 1946. After high school she attended Grace Nursing School in Hutchinson, Kansas where she received her degree and practiced as a registered nurse until her marriage. Dorothy married Albert (Al) V. Soukup December 12, 1952 in Haven, Kansas. Dorothy moved around the country following husband Al's career with the United States Public Health Service. After stops in Lawrence, Kansas; Wichita, Kansas; Hays, Kansas; Victoria, Kansas; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Billings, Montana; Cleveland, Ohio; and Boston, Massachusetts they settled down in Denver, Colorado where Al served as a public health service officer with the National Park Service. However, Dorothy always considered Kansas and Haven her home. Dorothy enjoyed golf, painting, travelling and attending Jean Redpath concerts. Following Al's retirement in 1988 they searched the country for a place to enjoy retirement but in the end they moved to Ken-Caryl Ranch in Littleton, Colorado to be near their daughters. At Ken Caryl she continued to paint, travel, attend concerts and follow the lives of her five grandsons. Dorothy was preceded in death by husband Albert V. Soukup in 1997, father John Nicklaus in 1966 and mother Mabel E. (Norton) Nicklaus in 1997. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Nancy Ann Snyder of Littleton, Colorado and Mary Beth Johnson of Arvada, Colorado; her five grandsons Jonathan Snyder, Zachary Snyder, Travis Snyder, Dustin Oliver and Teague Oliver; and great-children Joshua Snyder, Mark Snyder, Caroline Snyder, Sophie Oliver and Fiona Oliver. At Dorothy's request her remains will be will be placed at the Haven Priest Cemetery near her family farm where she will be with her beloved husband and parents.
