Douglas Ingwer Johansen June 23, 1925, to November 12, 2018
Longtime Denver area architect, Doug Johansen, passed away on November 12, 2018, at the age of 93. Doug was born in Columbus, Nebraska on June 23, 1925, to George and Sarah Johansen. He was the sixth of seven children. Doug attended public schools in Columbus until he was 18 years old when he joined the Army Air Corps and was trained as a ball turret gunner for service in World War II. Thankfully, the war ended before he was shipped overseas and he was able to pursue an architectural degree on the GI bill from the University of Nebraska.
After graduation, Doug moved to Denver where he enjoyed a prolific 40-year career as a commercial architect. As a project manager for James Sudler and Associates and then for RNL Facilities Corporation, he managed many significant buildings including the Denver Art Museum's original Ponti building, the AMAX building in Golden, the Denver Police Administration Building and several structures on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. He also helped to manage the renovation of the Daniels and Fisher clock tower and Denver's US Mint.
In 1956, Doug married the late Lois Kennec and they enjoyed 58 years together until her death in 2014. They lovingly raised three children. Together they taught their children about loyalty to family and friends whom they often hosted at their home and for whom Doug helped design and build many home improvement projects. Doug is survived by two sons, Brent (Kat) Johansen, Mark (Marianne) Johansen and a daughter, Julie (Mark) Huun; and five grandchildren, Jack and Kate Huun, Bryce, Ross and Baden Johansen; his sister Marion Ebeling, brother Ray (Mary Jane) Johansen, brother-in-law Wayne Litten; as well as many nieces and nephews. He will be laid to rest with military honors in a private ceremony at Ft. Logan National Cemetery and a celebration of life will be scheduled in December.
