Duncan T. Rice

February 27, 1926 — May 25, 2020

Family and Friends,

Duncan T. Rice died and joined the Lords Kingdom peacefully on Memorial Day morning, Monday May 25th at the age of 94. He was born in Worcester Massachusetts on Feb. 27, 1926. Duncan was a WWII Veteran. Memorial Day was the perfect day for him to go home. He served in the Pacific Theater with the Navy on the USS LST 779. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Trine University, formerly known as Tri-State University, in Angola, Indiana on the GI Bill, which paid for his education. He was proud of this accomplishment.

Duncan had a beautiful LIFE! He lived honorably, faithfully and with integrity and adventure!
Duncan's father, Arthur W. Rice was a professional photographer and his mother, Harriet Mabel Shellshear Rice was a nurse. His sister, Patricia Rice Ladd was a science teacher.

At Trinity Episcopal Church in New York City, Duncan heard the voice of an angel singing in the choir. At that moment he saw Phyllis Ellen Dean Rice. Immediately his heart was hers. Phyllis and Duncan married in 1955 and had been married for 60 years before Phyllis' passing, on October 27, 2015. They moved to Venezuela right after they were married, with his first job assignment. They had two children while living in Venezuela, Cynthia Alice Rice Smith, (Cindy, married to Michael G. Smith) and Arthur Dean Rice, (Art, married to Mary Plath Rice).

His grandchildren, Sean F. Smith, Phillip D. Smith, Christopher M. Smith and Sarah May Rice-Velarde all live in Colorado as well as his four great grand-children, James F. Smith, Austin M. Smith, Alice T. Smith and Graham T. Rice-Velarde.

When Duncan and Phyllis moved back to the United States (after 6 years of living internationally), Duncan continued his work as an engineer, building manufacturing plants across the USA and in Europe, with his home base in Littleton, Colorado. He was incredibly happy to say that his family all live in the same zip code area 80120.

He was also a master wood worker, leaving a legacy of his furniture pieces and his wooden toy creations to family, friends, and the church. He loved the great outdoors, hiking, backpacking, fishing, and sailing. He also loved traveling around the world with his beautiful wife. His love of the outdoors gave him the expertise to be an excellent Boy Scout leader for his son, Art.

Duncan and Phyllis loved their church family at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. They attended for approximately 53 years. Duncan will join Phyllis in their final resting place in the columbarium at St. Timothy's.

Cindy and Art both feel incredibly blessed to have had parents that demonstrated love, honor, service, and humility. They both had a life well lived!!!

The immediate family will be celebrating Duncan's life with a simple Chapel service at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. The date and time have not been established, due to our current circumstances with the Covid 19 pandemic.

In Duncan's memory, family and friends can choose to donate to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, Young at Heart Senior's Fund at 1401 E Dry Creek Rd, Littleton, CO 80122.
