Earl Paul Sewald

October 1, 1931 — August 13, 2011

Earl Paul Sewald, born to Paul and Josephine Sewald on Oct. 1, 1931 in Berthoud, Colorado, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2011. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He grew up in a farming family, was involved in 4H and sports. Earl served in the Army during the Korean War from July 1952 to April of 1954 when he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. During his service he received the National Defense Service, Korean Service, and U.N. Service Medals, and Bronze Star. An avid sports fan of the local teams, and a 34 year Bronco season ticket holder with his wife Rita, Earl often expressed both his positive and negative expert advise during Rockies and Bronco games. For many years, Earl and Rita belonged to the Boots and Bonnets Square Dancing group, however, some of his best times were the family camping vacation in the Rocky Mountains. A 55 year resident of Thornton and a founding parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Earl volunteered his time in many capacities, but was most recognized as one of the 9am ushers. Earl also served their sister church in the Philippines by making 1, 000s of rosaries. He was a self-made do-it-yourselfer, always willing to lend a hand to any and everyone who needed help, and enjoyed woodworking, crafts, and beadwork. He loved to play cards with family and friends and loved to tell stories. He is survived by Rita, his loving wife of 55 years and 4 children, Mark Sewald (wife Susan) of Aurora, Colorado, Dana Foss (husband Greg) of Waco, Texas, Joel Sewald (wife Julie) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Lora Cartwright of Aurora, Colorado, his 9 grandchildren, Danielle, Brian, Jerome, Mathew, Nicholas, Jessica, Chad, Dustin, Amanda, his 6 great-grandchildren Stephen, Joseph, Kolbi, Timothy, Tatum, and Nathan, his 8 brothers and sisters, Mildred Price, Alice Savolt, Don Sewald, Bernard Sewald, Bernadine Dougherty, Rich Sewald, Jim Sewald and Frances Loos. A Viewing will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 5-6:30PM followed by Recitation of the Rosary. Funeral Mass will immediately follow at 7PM, all at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 9371 Wigham Street, Thornton. Graveside Services will held on Friday, August 19, 2011 at 1:15 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Pavilion C, Denver. Map and directions to Fort Logan will be provided Thursday evening. Please share your memories of Earl and condolences with his family by selecting the ""Sign Guestbook"" button below.
