Edna Nadine Newkirk October 4, 1930 - January 11, 2009 Resident of Monument, CO, formerly of Lakewood, CO. After putting up a valiant fight against breast cancer passed away peacefully at her home in Monument, CO. Edna was a loving mother, wife, and friend to all she knew. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dean, who towards the end of her life, was her loving and devoted care giver, her daughter Dena Newkirk, son Brian (Vickie) Newkirk, and brother Clarence Bergh. Edna was born in Independence, IVlO to Clarence and Anna Bergh. She grew up in Denver, CO where she graduated from North High School and the University of Denver. She worked for many years as a chemist making chemical solutions and other products used by hospital laboratories. She also spent many hours helping out as a volunteer at Jefferson County Democratic headquarters. She seldom missed a chance to work as an election volunteer and was an active member of the Red-Hat Society. Edna loved to read mystery novels, especially Tony Hillerman, Janet Evanovich, and Dick Francis. She also loved to go camping with her husband and was a member of Family Campers and RV (FCRV) association. She loved people. There were many times where she would meet a stranger in line at the grocery check-out counter and by the time she checked out, she knew the person's whole life story and formed a new friendship. Edna never passed a baby without going over to give the baby some love. She also had a soft spot for the family dogs, which she considered her children. She loved the music of Don Williams, Big Bands, movie soundtracks, and all types of instrumental music. She never missed an opportunity to break into a dance or sing along when she heard something she liked. Viewing will be held on Thursday January 15, 2009 at Horan & McConaty Funeral Home, 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd, Lakewood, CO between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service to Edna on Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Green Mountain Presbyterian Church at 12900 West Alameda Avenue at 1:00 pm followed by an interment ceremony at Crown Hill Cemetary, 7777 W. 29th Avenue, at 3:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the Presbyterian church where we encourage her friends and family to gather to share their stories, experiences, and celebrate her life. She truly loved everyone and in return was loved by all she touched.
