Edward Clyde Griffin was born May 15, l92O in Clarksville, Florida. His mother was Lantie Virginia Gaughf, born Nov. 22, l883 in Georgia, and his father was Edward Carlton Griffin, born Nov. 2, l873 also in Georgia. Ed was the youngest of 12 children, 9 of whom lived to adulthood. The Griffins moved to Quincy, Florida when Ed was 5 é½ years old, then to Apalachiacola, Florida, and finally back to Quincy. They lived in a large three-story house on the historic Spanish Trail. Ed went to Elementary, Jr. High and High School in Quincy, and then attended the University of Florida for two years. On Sept. 21, 1941, Ed joined the Navy and received basic naval training at U.S. Naval base at Norfolk, VA. On Dec. 21, 1941 he boarded the USS Broome at the naval supply base at Portland, ME, where he spent the next 39 months aboard ship. Ed was Storekeeper 2nd Class, and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was very proud of his military service. Ed also served as Post Commander of American Legion Post 193 in Denver. While stationed in Portland, Maine in 1944, Ed met Florence Rosic at a bowling alley. They dated for a year and became engaged in 1945. They married on May 22, 1946, and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2006. Ed and Flo had two children, Donna and Ed, Jr. Ed worked for Yale & Towne Manufacturing for many years, starting in New York and Connecticut, then transferring to Denver in 1956. While in Denver Ed became an architectural hardware consultant, bidding on and supplying hardware for new commercial buildings on behalf of several businesses. He continued this until his retirement in 1987. Ed was an avid sports fan, especially baseball, fishing and football. He held season tickets to the Broncos for years and followed many baseball teams. He had a Best Friend, Duke, who was a black lab. Ed and Duke were inseparable. They spent many days' duck hunting, waiting for fish to bite, and just hanging out. Duke was named after John Wayne, whom Ed regarded as a great actor and even greater American. He had all of 'The Duke's' movies and could recite most of them. Ed's greatest love was for his family, who will miss him forever.
