Edward Joseph Mehlin

Eddie, 84, passed away April 17, 2009. Beloved father of Lark (Wayne) Applehans, Shawn (Charles) Coble, Erin (James) Whelan; grandfather of Kelly (Rachel) Coble, Kati Coble, Ryan and Anna Whelan; uncle of Peter Titus; brother-in-law of Mike Kelly. He was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen. Eddie was a native of Colorado. His life's work and passion was flying. He obtained his Commercial Flight Instructor rating at the age of 18. Eddie served in the U.S. Naval Air Corp., then went on to become Chief Pilot and V.P. of Vest Aircraft from 1947-1962, where he attained many records including flying into every state of the Union (except Hawaii) as well as Mexico and Canada. In 1962, he joined Clinton Aviation as Multi-Engine Sales Manager, selling the first Lear Jet in Colorado in 1965. In 1976, he joined Aviation Sales, Inc., a Pilates and Piper Aircraft Distributor, where he remained until his death. In 1985, Eddie was inducted into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame. He flew over 351 types of aircraft as Pilot in Command, logging over 40, 000 hours in the air. During his 72 year career he helped develop the basic infrastructure of business aviation in Colorado. Eddie's efforts left the citizens of the state with an aviation heritage second to none. He was a friend and mentor to hundreds of young aviators, helping to launch their careers. His activities, achievements and integrity in the industry were recognized by all. Eddie always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. He was devoted to Kati, his wife of 52 years, his family and vast number of friends.
