On October 6, 2018, Edward Everett Pugh, Jr. passed away, surrounded by his beloved wife Dolores and their loving family. For 96 years, Edward walked this life and enriched the lives of those who knew him. U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, oil man, life-long geology scholar, family patriarch and friend, all who knew him are truly blessed.
Ed was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 20, 1922 to Edward and Lois Pugh. He graduated from Southwest High in 1938. It was there he discovered the science of geology which would become his life-long vocation. After graduation from the University of Kansas City with his degree in Geology, he entered the U.S. Navy and graduated as an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve from Columbia University in June 1943. He served aboard the USS Wainwright (DD-419) from June 1944 through March 1946 seeing active duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific including preparations for the invasion and the occupation of Japan.
Upon separation from the Navy, Ed entered the University of Oklahoma and earned his degree in Petroleum Engineering. He dedicated his entire career to the oil business first in Wichita, Kansas and then Denver, Colorado. He worked for the National Cooperative Refinery Association [NCRA] until his retirement. Ed's scholarly interest did not end upon his retirement. Acting on his principle that knowledge is to be shared with all, Ed helped establish the Denver Earth Resources Library in 1986 where he volunteered two to three days a week for over 20 years.
In 1950, Ed married Margaret Anne Hutchins in Kansas City. Ed and Margaret had three children; Tim, Janice (Wohler) and Anne (Keeney). They lived in Wichita, Kansas until 1966 at which time NCRA moved to Denver. Margaret Anne passed on in 1967 and Ed continued to rear his children alone. In 1976, Ed married Dolores Fergus Hickey and welcomed her three children into their family; Patrick, Michael and Mary Kathryn (Duke). Ed and Dee enjoyed 42 years together; traveling, dancing and watching their family grow.
Ed passed in peace on October 6, 2018, at University of Colorado Hospital following heart surgery. He was surrounded by his loving family. His love, wit and wisdom will abide in the hearts and minds of his dear wife Dolores, six children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. We who love him pray his journey is blessed with calm seas and a following wind.
