Eileen Mary Sandstrom, aged 92, passed away peacefully early morning, August 29, 2018 at her daughter's home surrounded by her family in Littleton, Colorado.
Eileen was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts on October 2, 1926 and raised in Springfield, Vermont, the daughter of John J. and Leona (Lashua) Marine Sheehan, and the ""baby sister"" to five older brothers.
After graduating from Springfield High School in 1944, Eileen trained at the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing and earned her R.N. in 1948. She worked in New York and Virginia before moving to Denver, Colorado to help open the Veterans Administration Hospital on Clermont Street in 1951, where she served as one of its original staff nurses.
In 1953, she married Edward C. Sandstrom at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Denver. A devout Catholic and devoted mother to four children, she continued her nursing career at St. Anthony's Hospital until 1981, when she retired. She and Ed moved to Heather Gardens where they both enjoyed tennis, golf, swimming, square dancing, and trips to Blackhawk and Central City with friends. A lifelong seamstress and knitter, Eileen became an accomplished quilter and stitcher in her retirement.
In 2014, she moved into assisted living in Littleton to be near her family, where she participated in every activity offered, enjoyed being the life of the party with friends and staff, continued to work crossword and jigsaw puzzles daily, and spoiled her cat, Amy. True to her nature, she was kind, funny, and giving to all-the sunshine in everyone's day.
She is predeceased by her husband, Ed; son, Matt; and five brothers. Survived by her three daughters, Lisa S. Ulsh, Paula Sandstrom, and Lynn (John) Shearer all of Littleton, CO; five grandchildren, Ben, Nate, Mattie, Will, and Kaylyn.
A private celebration of life will be held by the family. Eileen will be interred with her husband and son at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W. Kenyon Avenue, Denver, CO 80236.
Memorial contributions in Eileen's name may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America, https://www.mda.org/.
