Elgene Beth Roper was born October 11, 1925 to Henry and Susanna Sattler in Dante, SD.
She passed away peacefully Tuesday January 17, 2023 at the age of 97. She lived for nearly
a century and had a long and fulfilling life surrounded by loved ones and dear friends.
Elgene grew up in South Dakota with siblings Wesley Sattler and Barbara Gering who have
each preceded her in death. They grew up on their farm in South Dakota, attending school
in a One Room Schoolhouse. She was close with her relatives and spoke fondly of her youth
throughout her life.
Elgene married Dana Davis on May 31, 1947. They had a strong marriage and she loved
him dearly. They welcomed their son Nolan Davis on January 22, 1951 and raised him to be
a good and loyal man. Dana passed too soon on October 11, 1968 and although their time
together was interrupted, she will be resting beside him again soon. Nolan has been a
devoted son throughout her life and dedicated time to her each week. She had nothing but
proud words to share about Nolan, adored him and appreciated all the love she received.
Elgene worked for the Telephone Pioneers of Mountain Bell for 40 years when she retired.
Prior to that she had worked in the Chicago Railroad Office, for a time at the War bond
Department, and the Rio Grande Motorway in Denver, CO.
Elgene was a part of a service sorority Sigma Gamma Phi for 50 years. She had a strong
bond with this beautiful group of women. They would gather and support one another, and
it brought her great joy to belong to this group, even up until recent days.
Finding another great partner Elgene was remarried to Donald Roper on October 20, 1973.
The two shared 12 years together before his passing. In this marriage, Elgene inherited a
Step-Daughter Susan Arndt. Elgene was there from the start to be the Dearly Loved
Grandmother of Sue and Larry’s Daughters Laurie Newton and Kelly Sorensen. She was a
wonderful Grandmother that passed on traditional values and beautiful memories. Her
Granddaughter’s are grateful for all of the times they can reflect on their lives knowing that
she was there along the way. Elgene was able to get to know her 4 Great-Grandchildren and
they also know how special she was.
Elgene was married to Eric Robertson June 11, 1996 . They met traveling and adored one
another like teenagers. They shared 8 beautiful years together before his passing in 2001.
Elgene had a full life and will be remembered for her strength and conviction to her values.
During her 97 years she worked hard and loved deeply. She had a special place in her heart
for each of her family and friends. She was good at caring for herself while caring for others.
She was bullheaded and not afraid to speak her mind. The full life she led will never be
forgotten by those that knew her.
