Elisabeth Harriet Nowlin passed away in the hospital on Monday, July 18, 2022. She was 86 years old and had lived in Centennial, Colorado for the past 7 years. Her family is comforted that she is out of pain now and with the Lord.
Elisabeth was born in 1936 in San Antonio, Texas to Robert and Harriet Nowlin. The oldest of four daughters, she grew up in San Antonio and attended Edison High School. In 1958 the entire family moved to the Atlanta, Georgia area, living mostly in College Park. In 1978, she moved to Locust Grove, farther south, and stayed there until she resettled in Centennial, Colorado, a suburb of Denver, with her youngest sister and her family.
Early in Elisabeth's adult life, and going on throughout her life, Elisabeth was a writer, having had children's short stories published in major kids' magazines. One of her stories in Highlights for Children was also chosen for a book of stories called "The Itch in a Hitch, and other humorous stories" and can still be ordered on Amazon. Elisabeth never totally stopped writing, sending personalized stories to her grand nieces and nephews and other children she loved.
While living in Georgia, her passion was also singing in the Henry County Community Chorus. She had a great alto voice and sang several beautiful solos. She loved to sing and treasured that time in her life.
Although limited in her walking, Elisabeth had good years here in colorful Colorado. She looked forward to seeing the Colorado snow, and enjoyed many trips into the mountains, especially into Leadville, Colorado! But she also loved the ocean and the beach, and missed her trips to Tybee Island near Savannah, Georgia - her favorite place!
For the past 6 years she and her sister were very active in a Daughters of the American Revolution chapter (Mount Rosa) and she was very proud of her chapter, and of her Patriots who had supported the American Revolution. Elisabeth was especially good at encouraging those who were not able to attend chapter meetings. She was a pro at sending cards and notes.
Elisabeth was a faithful Christian and worshipped with the Church of Christ. She sent cards to shut-in ladies at church also to encourage them. And every month, she donated to a Christian mission in India that supports widows and orphans.
Finally, even in her 80s, Elisabeth was pretty good with her smart phone and laptop computer for e-mails and online puzzles. She loved to stay informed about world events, and even though she had always been a Republican, she was thrilled to vote Trump out of office! Elisabeth was fun loving and kept hospital staff laughing even up to the end.
Elisabeth loved her family and is survived by her sisters who love her - Ellen Neal, Roberta Cosby and Louetta Smith, and their families, who have many wonderful stories to share in Georgia when they gather for her burial next to her parents.
A Celebration of Life here in Colorado will be on August 13th. Please contact the family for details.
