Ellen Farmer

September 2, 1929 — January 25, 2017

Ellen Elizabeth Farmer Ellen passed away on 1/25/2017 at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Lee Farmer and her two sisters Lorna Shire and Edna Ney. Ellen was born and raised in Denver's North Side neighborhood. She loved telling stories of those times as well as tales of her family history. These stories included ties to entrepreneurs responsible for development of the Moffat Tunnel, war heroes that almost single handily won the First and Second World Wars, the war in Iraq, and a Pinkerton agent. (Some of which may have even been true.) She also enjoyed the arts. Three of her stories about the arts included her older sister's legendary radio career as the Dunbar Coal lady, that dancer in Paris ""a few generations back"", and her own audition for the Denver Symphony Orchestra. Ellen was known far and wide for her ability in the garden. Whether it was nurturing her beloved Meade Street ""rock garden"" and coy pond, or the ""amazing"" public gardens at the Snowbird Condos, her green thumb was legendary! Some of her secret tips included washing the leaves with milk and playing classical music to ""sad"" plants in order to ""perk them up"". Among her other passions were turning crippled dumpster kittens, blind dogs, and psychotic puppies into beloved pets. She lent her organizational and leadership skills to the Barnum PTA, Colorado Girls State, American Legion Auxiliary and various condo boards, union and political campaigns and virtually any group she thought ""needed some structure"". But it was her role of family matriarch that she enjoyed most. She will truly be missed and mourned by her children Kathy Redick ( Ronald ), Stephen Farmer (Barbara), grandchildren Mathew Redick (Jenny Healy), Jennifer Lessmann (George), Susan Redick (Chris Walton), Joshua Farmer (Leigh) and great grandchildren Evelyn, Frederick, Nathaniel, Wyatt, Abbey, and Kenzie, as well as her longtime friend Mary Redick. Memorial services will be held at Horan & McConaty 3101 S. Wadsworth Blvd. Lakewood Co 80227 on 2/10/2017 at 11:00AM with interment to follow at Ft Logan National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Foothills Animal Shelter, 580 McIntyre ST., Golden, CO 80401.
