Erika M. Madrid, age 82, died at home in Westminster on June 30, 2021. She was born in Swinemunde, Germany and immigrated with her family to the United States in search of a better life in 1952. They settled in Malvern, Iowa. The community welcomed them with open arms. In keeping with the desire for greater opportunity, Erika's parents were adamant that she receive a good education. She did and it became her life's work as well. She went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska and earned a Masters Degree in Counseling K-12 at the University of Northern Colorado (formerly Colorado State College). She moved to Brighton, Colorado in 1966, where she met and married Gilbert B. Madrid. She worked most of her career in Brighton 27J and Adams School District 50 as a middle school counselor and teacher.
In her retirement, Erika enjoyed volunteering with the Westminster Friends of the Library and visiting with friends. She was passionately political and enjoyed working on campaigns in many different aspects. She is survived by her daughter, Mandy (Amanda) Fling, her son-in-law Dominic Fling, and her two grandchildren, Alec and Emma Fling. She was preceeded in death by her mother and father, Luise and Otto Starck, and her sister, Gisela.
Funeral services will take place at Horan & McConaty in Thornton on Friday July 9, at 3 p.m. Dessert will be served afterward. Flowers may be sent to Horan & McConaty in Thornton, 9998 Grant St. Thornton CO 80229.
