Estelle Fikany

Fikany, Estelle O. 1928-2008 Estelle was the daughter of Ruth Edna May Larick and William Edward Brundage. She was born on January 19th in Denver and was a lifelong resident. She received her high school diploma from Mt. St. Gertrude Academy in Boulder, her bachelor's degree in science from Clarke College, Dubuque, IA, and an MSW from the University of Denver. She retired from Ft. Logan Mental Health Center after over 25 years of service. Estelle was the mother of five children who survive her. Diann Harle (Michael) of Brevard NC; Edward Fikany of Denver; Shari Fikany (Richard Ford) of Denver; Helen Macias (Robert) of Brighton CO; and Michael Fikany (Lori) of Dove Canyon CA. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; Chris and Sarah Harle, Christine and Lisa Fikany, Carley Inman, Nick and Vanessa Macias, Alex and Dominic Fikany, and Michael and Alicia Lozano. She was a proud witness at the recent marriages of her grandson Chris to Cassie Chace and her grandson Nick to Jenny Black. She is also survived by her brother Richard Brundage (Becky) of Indian Wells CA. Estelle also appreciated a close friendship and love for family members Hal and Jean Mund and Ralph and Margaret Sears who survive her. Her lifelong friend Lois Brandhorst also survives her. Estelle was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Edward. They loved to travel, and spend time in their Rancho Mirage home. Both had a broad interest in Colorado history, and in politics. Estelle was the first woman to run for a Denver City Council seat in the early 60's. Although she lost her bid for election she ran so well that the door was opened for women after her to attain political positions in this area. She was active in the Republican Party for many years and was an advocate for the mentally ill. She belonged to the Public Employees Retirement Association and the Colorado Assn. for Public Employees. Estelle was a wonderful hostess and cook who loved to entertain. She enjoyed having her family and friends together on any and all occasions. She extended hospitality to all who came into her home with a generosity that will be remembered. She was a second mother to many friends of her children and especially to the Smith children who she loved with all her heart.
