Florence T. Gunnison

January 26, 1920 — March 27, 2016

Florence T. Gunnison, 1/26/1920-3/27/2016, Captain US Air Force devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully with family at her side on Easter Sunday after a remarkable 96 years serving her family, community and her country. She graduated from the nursing school at Mary Immaculate Hospital, Jamaica NY, class of 1941, and her career in the Air Force as a Flying Tigers Flight Nurse in WWII followed. She was awarded the Air Medal by Major General CJ Chennault for meritorious achievement in aerial flight and was also authorized to wear the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with two bronze battle stars for participating in the Burma and China campaigns. After her separation from the Air Force, Florence and her husband settled in the Denver area to raise five children where she continued her nursing career and helped her husband build a successful Specialty Advertising business. She was active at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and founded its Pioneers Club, as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister. She was active with the Wheat Ridge Women's Club, Red Hat Society and Meals on Wheels. She also founded the Prader-Willi Syndrome Assn. of Colorado Chapter. She is preceded in death by her husband John (1995) and is survived by her children Teresa Kosmicki (the late David Kosmicki), Donna Gunnison, John Gunnison Jr. (Gayle), Linda Gunnison (Brian Moore) and Cathleen Gunnison, 7 grandchildren, Krzysztof, Franz, John III, Grant, Kristin, Alyssa, Hannah and great granddaughter Payton. Funeral mass will be held Saturday, April 9, 2016, 10:00 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church Denver, 830 Elm St. Internment at Ft. Logan National Cemetery will be May 12, 2016, at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Denver Catholic Charities, Prader-Willi Association of Colorado or Volunteers of America.
