Floyd Gentry

July 2, 1943 — December 28, 2020

Aurora

Floyd Lee Gentry went to meet his Lord & Savior on December 28, 2020. Floyd was born to Dr. Francis Dawson Gentry & Martha Louise Hewes Gentry on July 2, 1943 in Lansing, MI. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sharon; daughters Janis (Nicholas) and Kathryn (Brian); grandsons Christopher, Nicholas, Dawson, Dylan and Steven; and brothers Robert (Sharon), Lawrence (Dora) and David (Gerra). He is predeceased by his parents, Dr. F. D. & Martha Gentry. Floyd & Sharon relocated to Aurora, CO from Albuquerque, NM in December 2019 to be closer to their daughters.

Floyd earned his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Southwest Missouri State University and later added a Masters of Arts degree from Webster College. He began his career at Bendix Corporation in Kansas City, MO shortly after graduation and his marriage to Sharon. He & his family moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1983 where Floyd spent the remainder of his career with Sandia National Laboratories until his retirement in 2007. He was an active member of IPC and earned the Distinguished Committee Service Award and Special Recognition Award as well as their highest honor, the IPC President’s Award, in 2000.

Floyd was a Christian who loved Jesus more than anything. He was a lifetime member of the Southern Baptist Church – most recently at Mississippi Avenue Baptist Church and previously at First Baptist Church and Sandia Baptist Church in Albuquerque, NM. Floyd became a deacon at age 25 and served in that capacity for 52 years. He also served as a Sunday School director and teacher for both youth and adult classes for most of his adult life.

Floyd was a member of the Poco Quatros Model A Club in Albuquerque and served as the President of that organization in 2007. He learned to rebuild Model A vehicles and rebuilt a 1929 Model A Ford (“Jesse”) which Sharon drove in college from the individual parts. He had a great passion for the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. He volunteered as a docent there for many years and worked to acquire and restore many of the displays. He had a great wealth of knowledge to share and enjoyed educating the visitors to the museum and sharing stories about all of the displays and historic events.
