Frederick "Fred" Arthur Cahalan

Fred Cahalan, adoring husband, and proud father of 4, of Thornton, Colorado died at home on November 30th at the age of 73.

He was born in Mason City, IA in 1951 to Jerry and Donna Cahalan and was the third child of eight total. Fred attended Holy Family Catholic school from K-8 then Newman High School grades 9-12, graduating in 1970. He worked several jobs during and after his school years. A paper route, cleaning offices and nursing homes, and working for the City of Mason City are some he talked of often before settling in the grocery business at Safeway, County Market/Easters, and Target all in Mason City. While working for Target he moved his family to Utah in 1997 and then to Colorado in 2000. Target promoted him to Grocery Team Lead and then to Executive Manager. Fred then went to work for Sprouts and Sunflower hoping to reduce stress as an assistant produce manager, but he couldn’t hide his leadership skills and quickly became produce manager. He retired in 2013.

Fred had two children from his first marriage, Jerry and Angie, and two from his current marriage with Karren, Dan and Hunter. All will miss him dearly, even his sarcastic comments and wild analysis. Fred-isms will be spoken forever.

He loved his children dearly, the good and bad parts, their triumphs and disappointments. Spending time with one or all brought him great joy. Jerry and his dad spent endless hours watching COPS since the 1990’s. Fred was Angie’s rock when life struck her with a hard blow. Dan’s dog, Odin, was a special friend to Fred, so much so that he always carried “pocket treats” for him. Hunter still has all the Coke items they collected going to thrift stores looking for treasure every day one summer many years ago.

Fred was preceded in death by his father, James “Jerry”, brother Michael, and grandparents Frederick and Leocadia Cahalan and Donald and Aurelia Abbott. Many Aunts and Uncles and cousins as well. 

Services will be held on Monday December 9th at Horan and McConaty Funeral Home in Thornton. A viewing will be held from 11:00am - 12:00pm, followed by the funeral service starting at noon.
