G. Collin Smith

April 4, 1934 — February 19, 2013

Gordon Collin Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather died peacefully in his home on February 19, 2013. The son of Thomas Gordon and LaPrele Smith, Collin was born on April 4, 1934 in Cedar City, UT. After graduating from Cedar City High School Collin attended the University of Utah where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering. Collin served honorably as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California North Mission. He also served two years in the US Army during the Korean War. Collin married the love of his life, Karma Joseph of Beaver, UT on November 23, 1956 in the St. George Temple. Following graduation he and Karma settled in Salt Lake City where Collin worked as an engineer. In 1967 he moved his family to Arvada, Colorado where, along with three business partners, he founded Absolute Waterproofing (later, Smith-Wolfe Construction). Despite long hours devoted to his profession and Church service, Collin's priority was always with his family. In time Collin and Karma were blessed with four children, Brad, Craig, Carolyn, and Valerie. Collin was known for his kind heart and willingness to serve others in any way he could. While serving as Bishop, he learned Sign Language so he could communicate with a family of deaf members of his ward. He interpreted for the deaf in many meetings over the years, including during the dedicatory services of the Denver Temple. His extraordinary teaching skill and innate ability to understand people resulted in him touching countless lives in a deep and personal way. He was an avid wood carver and also learned to play golf later in life. He served in several church positions and enjoyed studying the scriptures and gospel subjects. He was an example of righteousness to all who knew him. Family will receive friends on Friday, February 22, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 7577 West 80th Avenue, Arvada, Colorado. Family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday February 23, 2013, 10:00 AM, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 12995 West 72nd Avenue, Arvada, Colorado. Burial will follow at Golden Cemetery, 755 Ulysses Street, Golden, Colorado. Please share your memories of Collin and condolences with his family by signing the guestbook below.
