Dr. Gary P. Landis

July 24, 1945 — December 10, 2024

Gary left us on December 10, 2024, after a long life filled with intellectual challenge, adventure, with the love and satisfaction that comes with a devoted family and circle of many friends.

Gary was born in 1945 between VE and VJ day to Lt. Richard and Beth Throne Landis in Pomona, CA. He was a nerdy kid with thick glasses, a dedicated Boy Scout who became an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Occidental College in Pasadena where he discovered his lifelong interest in earth science and went on to earn his PhD in Geology and Physical Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. He served on the faculty of the University of New Mexico and later joined the Branch of Isotope Geology at the US Geological Survey as a research scientist. He held the firm belief that earth science research should be for the benefit of the public and not private interests.

After his retirement Gary became a generous patron to many organizations and enjoyed expanding his interests from science to the arts. He loved woodworking and was dedicated to perfecting a precise geometric angle. Gary was kind, he wore his accomplishments lightly was easy to be with and will always be remembered for his big warm and friendly smile.

Gary is survived by his loving wife and partner of 51 years, Gayle and his 5 children: Paul, Elizabeth (Dan) Peper, Michael, Kathryn (Keith) Smith, and Allison. 7 grandchildren: Rachel, JJ, Jonathan, Emma, Madison, Wyatt, and Brandon. Sister Kay (Bruce) Dillon and brother Dennis (Alex) Landis and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He has been reunited with our angels, grandson Jakob and granddaughter Sydney.

In remembrance of Gary, please donate to your favorite organization or simply honor his memory through acts of kindness and generosity.

A memorial service will be announced after the Holidays. Please check back later for details.
