Gary Lee Schlomer

Gary Lee Schlomer passed away into eternal life on the evening of Tuesday, September 12th. He was 81 years old. Gary was born in Mobridge, South Dakota, and grew up in the nearby town of Glenham. He graduated from Glenham High School in 1960. After graduating, he enlisted in the Unites States Navy and went to boot camp that fall. He left behind his high school sweetheart, Alyce Anderson, who was still in school. He came back to marry Alyce in 1962 and they remained married until her passing in December 2020. They had two children together, Brien and Debra, and lived in several states throughout his 20-year Naval career.
Gary became an officer in the Navy, eventually retiring at the rank of Lieutenant in October of 1980 and moved his family to Denver, Colorado to pursue his second career as a gunsmith. After successfully completing the course of study at the Colorado School of Trades, Gary joined the staff where he stayed until 2020, holding a variety of positions and eventually being considered an expert in the trade!
In both of Gary's storied careers, he made long term friendships that were very dear to him. He also enjoyed hunting, both game and pheasant, as well as gardening and reading - books were great friends as well! He loved his family and was so proud of his six grandsons!
Gary is survived by his son, Brien Schlomer (Gigi); daughter, Debra (Chuck) Hart; grandsons Levi and Caleb Schlomer and Nathanael, Ethan, Lance, and Wyatt Hart, all of Littleton, Colorado. He is also survived by his siblings; Judy (Jim) Curran of Mobridge, South Dakota, Boni (Mike) Weber of Aberdeen, South Dakota, Dana (Karen) Schlomer of Mandan, North Dakota, and Orin (Brenda) Schlomer of Mandan, North Dakota, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
An interment service with military honors will be held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado on Friday, September 29th at 9:00 AM. This will be followed by a memorial service at Zion Lutheran Church, 2600 S. Wadsworth Blvd, Denver, CO 80227.  A reception will follow immediately after the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Gary's memory can be made to Zion Lutheran Church and School.
