George O. DeVore

January 24, 1919 — August 14, 2004

George DeVore, aged 85, passed away in Denver on Saturday, August 14, 2004. Beloved husband of Jean for 63 years; devoted father of Patricia (Andy) MacMillan and George DeVore II; proud grandfather of Timothy (Robin) King, Brooke (Tom) Prater, and Brandon Zullo; doting great grandfather to Joshua King, born on his great grandfather's birthday, brother to Martin Johnson, and loyal friend to many. Preceded in death by his son Tommy DeVore and his grandson Sean MacMillan. George was born on a farm in Warren County, Iowa, on January 24, 1919, and there he grew to love the land and growing things. When he moved to the big city of Des Moines, his love of music drew him to work in big band ballrooms and produce concerts for such greats as Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Lawrence Welk, and Frank Sinatra. World War II saw him building airplanes for the first half of the war and flying in them (B-17 navigator) for the second half. More of his flights were humanitarian than bombing, as he and his crew flew French POWs back home when they were liberated. After the war, a move to Colorado, to attend C.U., and raise a family, resulted in his great love of the mountains, skiing, camping, hunting, and fishing. His work in sales brought him many lifelong friends. Later in life the fruits of his labor allowed him to follow his dreams of travel around the world to such places as Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Africa, Europe, and Russia, always pursuing his first avocation of photography. His fondest wish in life was to provide for his family and to enjoy good friendships. Visitation, Thursday, 8/19/2004, 5 to 7 pm, at Horan and McConaty, 1091 S. Colorado Blvd.; Mass of Christian burial, Friday, 8/20/2004 at 10:30am (viewing at 10:00am), Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 13120 E. Mississippi Ave.; Committal at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Area C, Friday at 12:30pm; Reception at Emil-lene's Sirloin House, 16000 Smith Rd., at 2:00pm.
