George J. MacDonald

April 7, 1924 — November 10, 2013

George J. MacDonald was born in Boston, MA, April 7, 1924. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, class of 1946, he also earned an MBA (with a concentration in Marketing) from Oakland University in Rochester, MI. Shortly after graduation from West Point, George began a long career with General Motors, starting with a program called Previews of Progress of which he stated, ""the practice of 1, 200 stage presentations converted me into a salesman."" Some of his career highlights included setting up the Cadillac display at the 1964 World's Fair, serving as National Parts Manager, and finding success as Zone Manager in Denver. After nearly 40 years, George retired in 1987 as Director of Business Management for Cadillac Motor Car Division. He found a second career in marketing and financial analysis. While at West Point, he met the sister of one of his roommates. It was not love at first sight, but after what he called ""a peripatetic three years"" of courtship, George married Jean. He and ""My Jeanie"" were married for over 63 years. Jean and George lived in many cities, but their favorite was Denver, so that is where they retired. Never content to sit on the sidelines, George was active in St. Thomas More Catholic Church, of which he was a founding member. He recently served on the Boards of the Carriage Club Home Owner Association, and of the Southgate Water and Southgate Sanitation Districts (including as President of the latter). As in everything he did, George was passionate about tracing his ancestry and was an active member and past president of the Columbine Genealogical and Historical Society. George was an avid tennis and hockey player, and enjoyed his weekly bridge game. He was preceded in death by his beloved father and mother, George and Mary, and by his sisters Marilyn (Mrs. William) Graham and Claire (Mrs. Russell) Donovan. In addition to Jean, he is survived by his five children: Deborah Brewer, Susan O'Dell, Joyce Purkey, Paul MacDonald, and Carol (Mrs. David) Rossidivito. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Dylan Brewer, Joseph ""Jeb"" (Tara) Brewer, Jillian O'Dell, Walter O'Dell, Tamsin McGrew, and Nathan Williams; and by 13 great-grandchildren. George is loved and will be missed by countless friends. Visitation will be held Sunday November 17, 4pm-7pm, Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 5303 E. County Line Rd. Funeral Mass will be held Monday November 18, 11am, St Thomas More Catholic Church, 8035 S. Quebec St. Interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery, November 18, 2:30 PM.
